How to Become a Travel Agent That Specializes in Disney

Step 1: Set Up Your Business Entity

The first step to becoming a Disney specialized travel agent is getting your business entity set up. Whether you opt for a sole proprietorship or an LLC, it's crucial to consult with a legal professional to determine the best structure for your goals. You’ll register your business with the state by filling out new business paperwork. Once you have registered your paperwork, you will receive a Certificate of Formation and the IRS will send you an EIN (Employer Identification Number).

You may need a “Seller of Travel” (SOT) license depending on where you live or who you are selling to. As Walt Disney World is in Florida, you will need to be with a host that has their Florida SOT; otherwise if you are independent you’ll need to get this license yourself.

 

Step 2: Obtain Your Credentials

Next up, you'll need to obtain credentials that will ultimately pave the way for your to register with Disney.

There are two options that we recommend to our students: IATA or CLIA.

An IATA number is a unique seven-digital code that gets assigned to IATA-certified travel agents who want to distribute airline tickets and/or gain industry recognition. Think of IATA as the mediator between airlines and travel agents.

CLIA registration gives you booking credentials to use with their cruise lines and partners, as well as professional development and training.

If you are working under a host (which most new agents do), then you will be using their IATA or CLIA number, no registration required. If you are independent, you will have to apply for those on your own. Some hosts allow you to apply for your own credentials while being hosted, but that should always be first checked with your host.

 

Step 3: Register with Disney

Once you've got your business entity and credentials sorted, it's time to register with Disney.

For independent travel agents, this involves filling out their form, specifying where you want your commissions to go, and ensuring all necessary details are covered.

Some of these details include your agency features (entity numbers, addresses and other information), a Travel Agency Profile, a U.S. Supplier information kit, direct deposit form, and some additional tax information. You’ll also have to note which states you are registered to sell (remember, that Seller of Travel License!) This may sound overwhelming, but you should easily have most all of this information handy!

If instead you are working under a host, this process is much easier, and you are simply just registering for a login under your host’s credential information. You get access to the Disney Travel Agent site and can begin the training!

 

Step 4: You’re (Nearly) Ready to Sell Disney Vacations

With your registration approved, you're technically ready to start selling Disney vacations. But before you start shouting this amazing accomplishment from the rooftops, it's essential to understand that Disney won't teach you everything you need to know about being a travel agent.

One of the most common misconceptions we see from Disney-loving travel agents is their assumption that Disney offers training on how to succeed as a Disney specialized travel agent. And unfortunately, that’s not entirely the case. While Disney provides product knowledge, they won't teach you the ins and outs of running a travel business.
